Now that some of us have seen the pics and know a little bit more about the new Nintendo Wii U system, what's your opinion of it?

[link]

Personally it looks like the controller will be a little on the bulky side based on the size of the thing. For everyone that hated the Atari Jaguar controller, they're REALLY gonna hate the size of this controller. Not to mention the fact that replacement and/or additional controllers (if you can call it that, considering it's more than a "mere" controller) is going to be pretty darn expensive.

Thoughts?

Idk, its pretty amazing looking, though borderline gimmick. I would definitely need to play one before I would purchase.

Good thing is you can use the old controllers too

I think it looks great. Ok I would of liked to of seen them show off the console too and give us a bit of info on that side of things, but this I right up my street with the controller.
It's great that it uses all the Wii accessories so that's gonna save on extra expense.
Also what's great is that they've already got the main big names in 3rd party on board from the off and they all seem to be really excited about it so as long as those guys think its awesome then thats deffinately a good thing.
My wife thinks it looks great and said 'We have to be getting one of those' and we've already started saving so it's gonna be an instant purchase at launch.
I just hope there won't be a De Ja Vue affair with stock problems like the Wii.

1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide, and 10.5 inches long, according to the sheet, and as expected, got a significant graphics upgrade. The Wii U can dish out 1080p HD graphics as well as standard def, and can connect to your television via HDMI, component, S-video, and composite. HDMI is also used for audio, but if you’re not using HDMI you also get standard AV out ports.

Under the hood, the Wii U will use an IBM PowerPC-based multi-core processor. The Wii U will also support up to four controllers, including the Classic Controller, the Wii Remote (or Wii Remote Plus) and other peripherals like the Wii Balance Board.

For me it was love at first sight.

Awesome potential and I applaud Nintendo for finally stepping up to the plate with current gen. Controller = horrible, though I believe it's just another thing Nintendo did on purpose so a few months down the line they can release a better one for more sales.

Just seem on e3.Nintendo.com A WiiU demo that shows off 5 player gaming utilising the normal Wiimotes and the new controller.
It's not for everyone I know, but it's gonna be great in my house.

Well, even considering the fact that's it's BS that Nintendo used this opportunity to make more money off of what the original Wii SHOULD HAVE been, I mean it's not like 1080p gaming was unheard of when the Wii came out or anything, I will definitely be Nintendo's biotch and buy one. I will always own the console that new Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc. games will be released for.

I have to kindly disagree, Open. Both Mario Galaxy's, Metroid Prime 3, Twilight Princess, DKCR, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, and several other Wii titles were some of the best spent cash that I've forked out on games in the last couple years. That's why I won't hesitate to buy the new Nintendo even though the Wii's life was cut short due to Nintendo being a bunch of dumb asses who didn't make it display better than 480p.

I fixed your post, make sure to use lowercase img, not IMG like photobucket uses.

Btw, funny cartoon!

I can totally see Microsoft putting screens in their controllers, then it will feel more like the Dreamcast. I would then feel complete inside.

The next couple of years will certainly be interesting to see what Sony and Microsoft come up with.
Sony will probably give the usual speech of Nintendo controller is just a gimic and not what gamers want, only to then release a very similar controller a few months later just like thy did with Move.

Yeah. I can't help but think the Wii U is going to be the next Dreamcast, but in both good and bad ways. I really hope it doesn't fail with the mainstream like the Dreamcast did. The world just wasn't ready for screens in their controllers in 1999.

Man, look how far we've come!

The big difference between Dreamcast and Wii U is support from the 3rd party Big Guns and they all seem really excited about it, so straight away going down the right path.
The other massive plus that I can see about Wii U is that although you've got this new controller which should come bundled with the console, it's not from what I can tell totally necessary to buy another as you can use all your old Wii controllers too which is gonna be great if you already own a Wii.
At the moment I suppose it's still early days regarding what the actual console itself will be able to do.
Hopefully Ninty will give us a bit more info regarding what else they have planned that's not about the controller soon.

seems to me More Heat Small package.. can be not good.

I am actually thrilled about wiiu because it means that wii will be outdated and unsupported in probably 2-3 years. Then I can get one, mod it, and put gamecube games on it, as well as wii games(if it doesn't appear to be something of a legal issue). Horray

@boredguy123 the console will play Wii games and it is compatible with Wii accessories but it won't play GameCube PROBABLY cause the system isn't compatibly with GameCube joystick. lol but I think it is possible to download GameCube games.

I won't be paying nintendo to download gamecube games, so I guess if it's not backwards compatible with GC games then I'll have to keep my old Wii hooked up too. I have around 300 retail GC games so I'd be crazy to pay Nintendo for a download just so I could play them on the new Wii. They really should have made the new Wii just as compatible with GC games as the first Wii was, including controller ports and mem card slots. The last thing I need is one more console connected to my TV. GRRRRRR

The lack of backwards compatibility with the PS3 is the main reason I have no interest in buying one, so it's kind of the same situation as new Wii. I don't want to have to keep my PS2 hooked up if I buy a PS3, and I don't want to have to keep my Wii hooked up if I buy the new Wii. Nintendo makes a shitload of money off of selling their old games as downloads so I guess that's why they won't just be customer friendly and make their crap fully backwards compatible like they should.

It's a shame really how Nintendo went from having the most powerful gaming system to the weakest. I don't like the look of the new console, nor do I like the look of the controller. So, I won't be getting one.

Like I've said before, I may not like the fact that NIntendo is coming out with a new console so soon, or that they chose to release a console that displayed in 480p when 1080p was the going thing at the time, but they have me over a barrel. Being a HUGE, life-long Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc. fan I have to own the console that is going to have those releases coming out for it. After the mind-blowing experience that Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were, and only in 480p on my high-def big screen, I can only imagine how absolutely amazing Mario Galaxy 3 is going to look in 1080p!!! I don't like having to buy another Wii so soon, but I guess you won this time, Nintendo!!

Look, the way I see it, if you don't like it pass it up. No use crying about it(not directed at Kiryu). Just because you spent money on a PS3 and 360 5 years ago, or in some cases, just recently, that is no reason to not support a new Nintendo system.

These current systems are over due for a new version by 2 years! Being an avid PC gamer, and a bloody big graphics whore, although its not all about gfx, I am happy to see this new system.

Plus, if you are a Dreamcast fan, it should appeal to you for obvious reasons.

"im fed up seeing new consols coming out do thay think we are made of money im quite happy playing with the old xbox ive only got the wii a year ago now thay have got this new consol when will it ever stop thay allways try to beat other consols when playstation one came out we got our moneys worth out of it but now you buy a new console after 2 years thay whant to bring out other new consol i will now only play retro games i like my ps1 and my old xbox the wii i only play the game cube games on it"

Just because you are a late adopter to the current gen, means that gaming shouldn't advance for others because you can't afford to buy them? What kind of logic is that?

Good thing I changed my ways and know it is all about gameplay and not graphics, I went from being a PC whore to a retro gamer over night because of this site. It humbled my ass real quick like lol.

The sooner the systems come out, the sooner you can afford to get them because the sooner they go down in price.

I will say, that the Dreamcast and original Xbox should have lasted a lot longer than they did though, Xbox still had some life left in her to compete with the still selling PS2 lol.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, had to get that off my chest lol. :p

Lol, like I said, I humbled myself real quick 3 years ago, it is not about the graphics at all, but it is nice to see a company think outside the box like Nintendo and keep things fresh.

I am by no means a hardcore Nintendo fan, I like them about as much as I do Sony, I don't hate them, but don't love them more than xbox or Dreamcast. Although my PSP is my baby.

I know what I said might come off as harsh, but seriously, advances in gaming should be stifled because somebody can't afford to pick it up on launch? Ridiculous!

Hell, I can't afford to be in PC gaming anymore, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see advances more than every 5 years.

I am a gamer on many platforms, and I think that Nintendo earned my respect at their presentation, and this is coming from a person that wholeheartedly hates the Wii.

I'm going to take that as a no, you don't feel better because you continued lol

But, I know what you mean. I love playing games on my consoles, but on my PC, I am a graphics whore, but the game also has to have a story line if you know what I mean. I don't really care too much for Nintendo, and I'm not going to be bashing them either. I voice my opinion when asked what I think, but other than that, I just keep my mouth shut. Mainly because it just ticks me off when people bad mouth Microsoft about the Xbox. I love my Xbox and 360 more than anything (aside my 3DO, that's got to be my favorite of any console I own)

A friend asked me if i thought it would cost $600 at launch and this is what i said.

Most likely, especially if its controller has a screen. I sure as hell won't pay $600 dollars for a system that does what ps3/360 has been doing for years. Let's not act like The new Wii games will be produced in some sort of miraculous quality often. Chances are they will just look the same as ps3/360.

How many companies would be willing to make the best version the Wii version , then port to the rest? Not many. How many third party companies make high quality games that push a system to its limits? almost none.

This is mostly assumption using the trend of systems past and just how gaming corporations work. I'd imagine the only people willing to pay $600 for this at release are kids who beg and beg their parents for it, rich people, or techies who HAVE to have everything right when it's released.

I just really don't see Developers willing to make exclusives for the Wii U that would look better than on anything else.

EA already said they could put Battlefield 3 PC quality graphics on the system, this is about the same as DX11 gfx.

Watching that bird demo I don't see how you could say that it has PS3 or Xbox gfx?

If the tech demos are that good looking this early in the game, I can only imagine how games will look in a few years.

I will agree it will cost a lot when it comes out. But the videos you see now are mainly PS3 and 360 ports to the system. Remember when the Dreamcast came out? It had PS1 and N64 ports which outnumbered the games that truly took advantage of the systems gfx?

I reckon the same thing will happen with this. It feels like Dreamcast all over again. It will take time to see ports from PC and from the ground up that really take advantage of it. Watch that video I posted above, EA confirmed how powerful the system is.

@Anthony: I don't know how anyone could hate the Wii, it has quite a few very good exclusive titles for it. Of course, I come from a time when Mario and Zelda were the big thing, not Call of Duty and Gears of War, so I guess that explains why I think differently than a lot of younger gamers. I'm not saying that you don't have a right to your opinion, I'm simply saying that it's hard for me to imagine someone not willing to give the Wii credit for the great games that it has.

@Grunge: I am not a kid who will be begging my parents, a rich person or a techie, but I will have the new Wii at launch because of the games that Nintendo makes for their own consoles. I couldn't care less about getting a multi-platform release for the Wii, I'd probably just get it on my XBox, but nobody else will have the Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Pokemon, Fire Emblem titles, and those alone will be worth the price of admission in my opinion. I guess if I was one of those FPS-only gamers then Nintendo exclusives wouldn't have much to offer me, but I'm a platformer and RPG fan so Nintendo has plenty of what I want.

This last comment isn't directed at anyone in particular, but I just want to say that I'm tired of people acting like colorful, light-hearted, cartoony platformers are for children only. I'm a grown ass man in every sense of the word, and I don't have to play shooters 100% of the time just to prove it. I grew up on the Mario's and Kirby's and I enjoy them as much today as I did back in the day. I don't have to be killing people or have the most realistic graphics on my screen to feel like a real adult. I think that it's mostly the young, immature gamers out there that think your manhood is directly connected to what games you play, but I completely disagree with that way of thinking, and I've lived through a lot more crap than most any young gamer out there so maybe that's why I know that I don't have to use a video game to grow hair on my chest.

@Kiryu_Kazuma Well said to you sir
I have a Wii and it winds me up hearing some numpties say that Wii is for kids.
Yes there are a load of crappy games which are aimed purely for the kiddie market, but there are also loads of great games that anyone with any common sense should enjoy.
Resident Evil 4 which Yes was a port from a previous gen, but playing it on Wii was an absolute joyas experience.
Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 just have to played as well as Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Red Steel 2 is also another game that was a joy to play and also Madworld which I just dont understand why it's not received the praise it deserves.
These are just a small portion of great games and there are plenty more that people need to explore.
I will just throw another into the mix as it's simply fantastic to play and that's Goldeneye Wii. It looks stunning for a Wii game and is such a joy to play.
The way I see it with Wii it's gonna be in some years down the line what Dreamcast is today.
Dreamcast got left behind and criticised by many Playstation fanboys, and it's only in recent years that those same people have got to realise how got it actually was and this is how I think will be the same with Wii.

I agree, I grew up on NES just like most 80's babies, and I still play NES games on my DC from time to time.

I am just saying that the Wii wasn't for me, it was aimed at kids and casual gamers, not that other hardcore Nintendo fans weren't along for the ride as well, but it didn't do it for me.

I am a more traditional gamer, so not being able to play the way I always had really turned me off from the Wii, and I was one of the ones that loved the Gamecube controller.

I am pretty excited for their new system, so I hope they pull out all the stops when it launches.

Thank you, Rez. Yes, I totally agree with the games that you mentioned. For the first year I had my Wii I thought that they were never going to stop making mini game titles for it, and I was seriously craving some games with substance, but it wasn't long before they started coming like crazy.

I also forgot a couple of Nintendo franchises when I listed them above. There's Mario (including Party, Kart, etc), Kirby, Metroid, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Punchout, Smash Bros, Earthbound (oh please make a new one!).

As far as worthwhile Wii games are concerned, there are countless excellent titles. Muramasa was an awesome 2D action/RPG along the lines of Odin Sphere. I aslo liked Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, which was not nearly as complex an RPG as other Final Fantasy games, but was very entertaining in it's own right. Mushroom Men was an excellent platformer. I thought that both No More Heroes games were very good, and even though they clearly didn't have the best graphics as far as realism is concerned, they had a nice comic book feel, and the game itself was more about gameplay than graphics anyway. Although it was a port from the Gamecube, most people consider Twilight Princess to be a Wii exclusive, and one of the best Zelda games made. I loved Metroid Prime 3, and personally felt that it was the best in the series. I just bought Other M and haven't played it yet, so I can't speak on that one. I've heard good things about the new Goldeneye and Pikachu Park, although I haven't had the opportunity to play either yet. Spectrobes was a great Pokemon-style action/RPG that many people don't mention when they speak of Wii exclusives, but it was a pretty top-notch title as well. Deadly Creature was very cool and had nice graphics for an early third-party Wii game, where else can you be a scorpion and a tarantula? Spyborgs was an awesome arcade shooter/beat-em-up by Capcom, and unfortunately most people have never even heard of it. One word describes House of the Dead: Overkill........SWEEEET! If you like on-rails shooters you have the House of the Dead 2 & 3 pack, which although not completely exclusive to the Wii, were never released anywhere else together like that. You also have two completely exclusive Resident Evil rail shooters and a Dead Space rail shooter for the Wii only.

I could go on and on and on and on, so anybody who ever tells me that there were no good exclusives on the Wii would remove any doubt in my mind that they were completely ignorant on the subject, and I could give them an even longer list of great exclusive games than what I've listed here.

I'm not trying to come across as argumentative, Anthony, and I hope you don't take it that way because I like you. I never understood it, however, when I've heard people say that they Wii was for "casual" gamers. I've spent more cash and probably logged more hours of playtime on video games than anyone I've known in my entire life, so I consider myself as hardcore a gamer as I could possibly be. Considering that there are such deep, long, games for the Wii as Twilight Princess, Fire Emblem, and even the two Mario Galaxy's, I don't know how that makes it a console for casual gamers. I'm not arguing so much as trying to understand what exactly people mean when they say that. I feel that, just because the Wii may have offered many mini game-based games for it, that doesn't mean that it was actually aimed at the casual gamer, because there were also many games that had as much substance as any game for any other console. Therefore I would say that the Wii may have appealed to casual gamers more than some other system, but it was far from being a console specifically for casual gamers, rather a system with something for everyone.

P.S. I left a game off when I was naming some of the great exclusives for Wii in my last post. A Boy And His Blob was extremely good, and probably the remake of the year that it came out.

Here's just a few of my most favourite Wii games. Some are quilty pleasures, some are simply just must haves, but most of all they are all the ones I most enjoy playing for one reason or another.
Also forgot to mention earlier that also there is a wealth of simply awesome WiiWare games. Just recently got Fast Racing League which looks and plays fantastic.

No worries bro, I don't find you to come off as cross, far from it.

I guess my biggest gripe with Wii was the controller, and we have all 3 systems here. The controller is also the reason why I never play the PS3 here, the basic design hasn't changed since PS1.

If Sony had gone for a more ergonomic controller like 360, it would be my favorite system today. 360 has a controller that contours to the human hand like no other, and the controller is everything to me,

To me, the Xbox is an evolution of the Dreamcast controllers good qualities, and it improves on it in almost every way. I prefer triggers for racing and FPS games, as that is what I mainly play current gen.

On my Dreamcast, I am pretty much open to all genres, as long as the game isn't too slow.

FTW = Acronym of "For the win" It is an old WW2 saying the Americans used to use. In it for the win.

This isn't in response to what Anthony said about the original Wii controller, but to what a lot of people on various sites are saying about the new Wii.U controller.

I would have to disagree with people who say that it's too big. When it comes to video games, bigger is almost always better, with a few exceptions, but I don't really want a controller that's as small as my cell phone, so I don't think that Nintendo should worry about having the tinyest controller, despite what the haters say. The fact that it's big is going to make the screen a lot more usable than a screen that is hard to see, especially for people who don't have a 12 year old's eyesight and don't want to hold the controller up in front of their face to make out what they are looking at. Personally, I don't want a tiny controller, I don't have tiny hands. I love my GBA SP but I can barely play it because my hands are too big. It may be a little big for younger gamers, but something tells me that they'll manage to deal with it if they want to play bad enough, what I would worry more about is the expense of replacement if younger kids break/scratch the screen. I'm not particularly worried about how the big controller works for kids anyway. If I fork out the cash to buy a Wii.U, which I will be doing, I want it to work well for my hands, and I think that the new controller will be great. I just can't wait to see what kind of use they make of the controller when separated from the console, as far as mini games and other such apps being used on the controller as a hand held console in and of itself goes.
